A. J. Gordon (1836-1895) is known in today’s Evangelical circles by two Christian institutions bearing his name: Gordon College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. However, long before these schools were founded, Gordon became widely known as the pastor of Clarendon Street Baptist Church, Boston.
In the early years of his ministry at the church, Gordon experienced a remarkable dream and a dynamic cleansing and anointing of the Holy Spirit, which changed his life and ministry. God mainly used two men to influence the pastor’s spiritual renewal: a godly layperson and the renowned D. L. Moody.
The Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost, filling, cleansing, and empowering the thirsty-hearted disciples of the Lord Jesus. What occurred in the hearts of those followers of Jesus two thousand years ago awaits fulfillment in the lives of believers in every generation, including ours.
Nowhere in Scripture are we told to seek for signs, but we are urged to seek the face of God for the fullness and ongoing filling of the Holy Spirit. As he exposits the Scriptures, A. J. Gordon points us in the right direction, writing from his own experience.
